Mattresses don’t always tell us when they need replacing. Unlike our clothing or cars, mattresses don’t always show signs of wear, and continue working long after their prime. Sleep professionals recommend that your mattress be replaced every eight years or so, but most will put off replacing their mattress for years beyond this recommended time frame. Not sure if your current mattress is ready for an upgrade? Consider these 4 tell-tale signs that it’s time to replace your bed.

 

You get a better night’s sleep at hotels or in other people’s guest rooms.

If you are traveling for the holidays, you may find yourself getting a great night’s sleep on the hotel bed instead of your own. This is not how it should work. If you are not getting a good night’s sleep it is because your mattress is not supporting you as well as it should. You need a good night’s sleep to be able to function properly the next day, as well as to stay healthy. Being able to sleep well in your own mattress is extremely important.

 

Chronic morning aches and pains.

Another sign that it is time to replace your mattress is if you wake up with aches and pains every morning. This is a sign that your mattress is really not providing you with the support and comfort you need during the night. Springs could be poking you because the mattress is wearing out. This is really not going to allow you to sleep deeply every night.

 

Excessive sinkage.

All mattresses will show some signs of sinkage, since the foam in your bed as well as the springs will slowly lose their elasticity. While some sinkage is nothing to worry about, anything beyond 4-6 inches in the center of your bed is a sign that it’s time to replace your mattress. If you find that your bed tends to sink or dip toward the center of the mattress—or anywhere your body usually lays when you sleep—that’s a good sign that your bed is well past your prime.

 

Rips and tears.

The last sign that it may be time for a new latex mattress is if your mattress is showing signs of wear and tear. This could include holes in the mattress and rips in the seams. It could also include an uneven mattress surface. If your body is still imprinted in the mattress after you have been up for a while, it means that your mattress is losing its elasticity. This will cause those aches and pains in the morning. So dips and lumps in the mattress are definitely signs of a mattress going bad.
